Grandpa’s Boat Sets Sail

On a recent visit home, my dad gave me a toy boat that had been designed by Grandpa. His was an active creative mind and he was forever experimenting with a variety of toys and crafts.

I was thrilled not only to have another item of Grandpa’s which I was not aware he had built, but because it could serve as the basis for another project.

Bladensburg Waterfront Art Festival is coming up this Saturday and I got to thinking, what better way to celebrate the Anacostia River than with a boat?

So here is the prototype, based on Grandpa’s design, though smaller and with inlay added.

We’ll see how the “engine” runs (I’m still figuring out the right rubber band).

Who knows? Maybe some kid on Saturday will be sailing one of these on the Anacostia!
